Wörthersee: Velden & Pörtschach

The Carinthian Wörthersee is a paradise for party and lifestyle lovers and a meeting point for bikers, hikers, and runners. The cherished city of Velden lies directly on the banks of the lake and sees more than its fair share of party-lovers and sun seekers due to its central casino and its sunny Café terraces and bars. While taking an evening stroll on the lake promenade in Pörtschach you would be forgiven for thinking you are on the Adriatic coast, rather than in Austria.

Kärntner Kasnudeln (cheese Ravioli)

This Carinthian speciality, a traditional kind of cheese ravioli, used to be the main fare on Fridays, a meat-less day according to Catholic tradition. The Kärtner Kasnudeln, which are mostly filled with curd cheese, potatoes and mint or chervil, have meanwhile found their way into the menus all over country.

The Lindwurm Fountain

The Lindwurm dragon is said to have been slain by courageous men in the area of the Carinthian state capital, which made the area safe and fit for settling. The Lindwurm fountain on Neuer Platz in Klagenfurt not only shows the city’s heraldic animal, but is also the symbol of the Carinthian state capital. The fountain was commissioned by the city in 1583 on the orders of the Carinthian council. In 1636, a statue of Hercules was added to the ensemble.

Castle Hochosterwitz

Castle Hochosterwitz, perched on top of 150m tall limestone cliffs, is located to the northeast of Klagenfurt. For over 450 years, the castle has been the possession to the Khevenhüller family. Now, in its 18th generation, the family are still doing everything they can to preserve the castle and to make it so attractive that each visit is an experience to remember.

Top Tip: Feel like a true noble knight and indulge yourself at the knight’s feast in the castle restaurant

Clock Tower Graz

What is wrong with the clock face of the Graz clock tower? If you look a little closer, you will see that time has a different value here. Hours count more than minutes, and rightly so, because the area under the clock tower is magical. If you let your gaze wander over the gardens and the city, then you will know why. From the city you can explore the Schlossberg on foot. A ride on the Graz fairy tale train is recommended for kids.
Cool: Slide down into the valley with the new Schlossberg slide, the highest underground slide in the world!
